Free Insulation Grants in Wolverhampton: Every Scheme Explained
A complete roundup of the free insulation grants open to Wolverhampton homeowners in 2026, what each one covers, and how to find the one that fits your home.
There is more free insulation funding available in Wolverhampton than most homeowners realise, but it is spread across several schemes with different rules. This guide brings them together so you can see what you might qualify for.
ECO4: the main scheme
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is the workhorse scheme for free insulation. It fully funds cavity wall, loft, solid wall and floor insulation for eligible homes and runs until 31 December 2026. You qualify either by receiving a means-tested benefit or through City of Wolverhampton Council's LA Flex route on income, health or fuel-poverty grounds. Our ECO4 eligibility guide covers the detail.
Warm Homes Local Grant: up to £30,000
The Warm Homes Local Grant is the successor to the Home Upgrade Grant and provides up to £30,000 per household toward insulation, heating and energy measures. It targets lower-income households in EPC D to G properties, delivered through West Midlands local authority partners. Because the ceiling is so high, this is the scheme that can fund a complete solid wall insulation project. See our dedicated guide on the Warm Homes Local Grant.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 for a heat pump
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not insulation funding, but it is closely related. It pays a £7,500 grant toward an air source heat pump to replace a gas or oil boiler. A well-insulated home runs a heat pump efficiently, so many households insulate first and switch to a heat pump afterwards. It is worth knowing about as the logical next step.
Wolverhampton-specific support
City of Wolverhampton Council publishes an ECO Statement of Intent with LA Flex criteria, and works with Act on Energy, the regional energy advice charity, to identify and refer fuel-poor households to accredited installers. With around 59% of local homes in the eligible EPC bands, the council's focus on reaching these households means many Wolverhampton residents can get funded insulation through the right route.
How the schemes compare
- ECO4: Funds all insulation types. Benefit or LA Flex eligibility. Ends Dec 2026.
- Warm Homes Local Grant: Up to £30,000. Lower income, EPC D to G. Best for solid wall jobs.
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 toward a heat pump. The post-insulation upgrade.
